The opening is deliberately specific rather than general. Third call since I walked in. Five years, first ring, yes sir. Lunch, midnight, Sunday, yes sir. It establishes that the narrator has been perfectly compliant for years, which is what earns the refusal that follows.

The chorus is built as a switchboard. Boss is calling, rent is calling, the whole world is calling — not tonight. Then the line the song turns on: tonight my body picks up. Everything else goes to voicemail; the body is the only caller getting answered.
