From there the setting does the work. Silence in the peth, darkness gathered in the old wada, the wooden staircase going kar-kar-kar. Someone hidden in the dark. What was a civic eccentricity — an entire neighbourhood enforcing its nap — becomes the reason nobody is coming when you shout.

The language is deliberately street Marathi, full of katta swagger, and the speaker mocks the victim in exactly that register: you were talking big at the corner, weren't you. Where do you think you are turning, the door is shut. One to four, this is my business here.

Then the detail that turns it: blood on the Puneri paati. The board that was only ever rude is now evidence.
